Ms. Kuang,

If by chance any of these links expire, can you inform me so that I can send the article to you.

Thanks.

Article (The "always reliable" policemen)

http://newpaper.asia1.com.sg/news/story/0,4136,139795,00.html?

This interesting article fully “inspires” my trust in Malaysia police as they can easily abuse their reliability to offer a teenaged girl a drink, which has soft drug in it to lock her in an apartment and gang rape her for eight days. She only managed to escape when she banged the window grills of her apartment when the policemen were out, thus alerting the neighbors, who helped her to escape and alert the “more reliable” police.

This article is worthy of discussion as policemen are the people whom our parents say we can trust the most. However, in this instance, the police did not bother to persuade this girl out of the bar which is the place where they had met her, but instead offering her a drug-filled drink to fulfill their darkest desires. This is unbecoming of a supposedly reliable policeman. Thus, we must discuss this issue to see if it can be avoided.

This article is presented in a direct, simple yet informative way, as it is a newspaper article. It seems biased towards the policemen from the words “they were policemen”, “ordeal” and “ only” which gave their actions a thin layer of evilness. However we must understand the mindset of the policemen in order to understand why they had done this and how to present such cases from happening.

I can guess that the policemen are feeling arrogant over their posts, because they think that since they are policemen, they are above the law and can do whatever they want. Thus they drugged the girl so as to gang rape her. I feel that the solution for this could be to force the message through heavier punishments or informative talks into the policemen that they are enforcers of the law, and should not do any crimes.

From the perspective of the teenaged girl, I feel that she must be feeling rebellious as she kept on running away from home and naive as she accepted a free drink from strangers. Thus, it cannot be said that the policemen are totally at fault for gang raping her, as the girl herself is so naïve that she can be easily drugged. Thus, I feel that perhaps the only solution to this would be for parents to maintain a harmonious relationship with their children so that they would know where their children are going and prevent such incidents from happening again.

I feel that we ought to empathize with the girl, as even though she is rebellious, she does not deserve to be treated in such an inhuman way. Moreover, she is still so young, this incident will forever leave a shadow on her heart, and thus my deepest sympathies go out to her. I cannot empathize with the policemen due to my own personal prejudices of rapists.

Lastly, I may be wrong in criticizing the Malaysia policemen as the police are still investigating the case, and thus the girl may have made up the story to earn some attention.

Article (Seeing the truth...or not)

http://newpaper.asia1.com.sg/news/story/0,4136,139785,00.html?

The article I am discussing today is related to a social issue that is probably close to everyone’s hearts, that of family. This article reminded me of the classic tale of Cinderella as in this article; the boy’s stepmother tortured the boy by beating him with a ruler and plastic bat. Not only that, she stabbed his eyes, ears and throat with chopsticks when he refused to eat his food after chemotherapy to cure his Hodgkin’s Disease.

This issue must be discussed, as everyone should have the right to feel safe in his or her own home and not suffer such injuries from one’s own home, and especially not from someone who should care for him. As this is a newspaper article, the author uses a direct yet informative style to deliver this shocking news.

At first glance, the stepmother seems to be at fault and may be even mentally deranged as she bit her husband and stab her own step-son. Moreover this article seems to be slightly biased as it uses words such as “apparently”, “allegedly” and “reportedly” to describe the mother’s actions which gives these actions a higher tone of wickedness. However, when you think deeper, you realize that the stepmother is not totally at fault for her actions.

From this article, we cannot know what the family situation at that household is like but we can guess that this family is not a happy one. Firstly, the stepmother is just a stepmother; it is more difficult for her to control her stepson than the biological mother. Secondly, the stepmother marriage may not be a happy one as can be inferred by her anger towards her husband when she bit his finger. Thus, we must look from her perspective and stand in her shoes. Perhaps due to the various pressures she has to face, she has to vent her anger somewhere. Thus, perhaps at that day, when her stepson refused to eat his food, her patience finally snapped and did such a horrendous act to her stepson.

If we can look from her perspective, we can guess that what has happened is not a murderous action done deliberately but rather a human action done erroneously. This is a human action that every one of us may do when faced with such uncertainties in marriage and irritating stepsons who refused to eat his food, but just that the magnitude and victim of her action is too much for us to bear, thus evoking the pity in us for the stepson and anger towards the stepmother.

Thus, not only must we pity the boy who is a victim of his stepmother’s fury, but also the stepmother herself who has to face such pressure from her marriage and the family she inherited that she became mentally deranged for a moment and did not think logically that her stepson refused to eat due to the treatment.

Lastly, I apologize if I had wrongly analyzed the stepmother’s mindset, as I am not a parent yet.
